Now we will attempt the bunker shot. This is one of my favorite shots and it is not difficult to learn.
The first thing upon entering the greenside bunker is to see what the lie looks like. If it is not imbedded, take out your sandwedge, dig your feet into the sand as we want a very solid base for our feet. Set up open (front foot away from the back foot) and open the clubface all the way. What we are going to do is to splash the club under the ball and let the Sand get the ball out of the bunker. Never try to pick it clean! Now we take the club back along there line of our feet. Which will be on an outside in plane. Make sure that you don't use your legs in this shot as it is an upper body and arms shot. If you try to use your legs you will end up hitting it fat or blading the ball across the green. (sound familiar?) Remember you are trying to splash under the ball so set the club about 2 inches behind the ball and that is where you want the club to strike the sand. You must make sure that you accelerate through the shot or the sand will stop the club.

If the ball is buried in the sand all we are trying to do is get the ball out of the bunker and somewhere on the green. So at least we have a chance for an up and down. Take the same set up stance but instead of opening the clubface, close it. It is going to act like a shovel this way. Set the clubface 2 inches behind the ball and hit down Hard at that target. What will happen is that the club will dig into the sand and erupt the ball like a volcano. The ball will come out with topspin so this shot will take some practice to get used to.

On the fairway bunker shot set up the same stance wise but keep the clubface square and set the clubhead at the middle of the ball. Now again it is very important to keep your legs still on all these shots. A little trick I do is right before I take the club back I try to lock my legs in place by tightening my calf muscles. ( It acts as a reminder for me) Always hit at least one more club as the ball won't fly as far.

Again always remember to follow through on your bunker shots except for the buried ball.
