TitlePlay To Your Handicap
SubjectPlay to your ability level
Body

This topic to me is one of the most important lessons players of all calibers need to understand. So many mid to high handicappers try to play well beyond their ability levels. This causes big numbers on holes that just aren't necessary.

Let's take for example an 18 handicapper. Par for the course is 72. As an 18 handicap par for you is not 72 but 90. By realizing that a par 5 is a par 6, par 4 is a par 5 and a par 3 is a par 4 will enable you to have a better idea of how to score on the golf course.

Too many times a player will try to make that 20 footer for a "par" and end up 3 putting. When in reality all the player had to do was 2 putt for his "par". Once a player understands what "par" is for him or her their scores will start to get better. You won't be throwing away shots by trying those "miracle" shots you see on T.V.

Remember that this is why we have a handicap system that allows players of all abilities to compete fairly. Now you and I know of the "sandbaggers" out there, but who are they kidding. Word travels fast and everyone knows who they are. It is not a good reputation to have.

As a golf pro I have seen too many cases in pro-ams where a player plays his "best round" ever in a tournament. This rarely happens and tournament officials are keenly aware of players like this. I would much rather have a team member that plays to their abilities and if they can play to their stated handicap we always have a good chance of winning!

So putt out all your putts, count all your shots and be proud of your game.
